(Things that Made Me Happy This Week)
Remembering how it felt to wait for the BFF to arrive.
•
The reveal of “the first felt shoes invented by kids.” Once they take off, I’ll be SO set.
•
Leaving behind the loud, velcro rip and complete restriction of the Papoose board. First, when I stood next to TWO as she got the stitches, and then when she had them removed. Both times I stroked her face and sang to her, thanking God that we could leave the hospital the moment the doctors finished. And that her injury wasn’t more serious. And that she was healthy.
•
4 inches of TWO’S babyhood – GONE.
(Baby-fine tangles and listening to a 2YO’s “No brush-a-my hair” excuses also GONE. My favorite excuse? “No brush-a-my hair, Mama. I have a rash.”)
•
Before I could ask what a rash had to do with getting her hair brushed, she turned to her sister and said:
TWO: Oh, I have a rash, ONE.
ONE: You have a rash? You know what that means…
TWO & ONE: RASH PRESENT!!!
Apparently we celebrate poor, personal hygiene with tissue-paper flowers in our house.
•
Not to be outdone in the bathroom department, ONE screamed, “MAMA!” from the toilet. I knew it wasn’t as urgent as she pretended, or urgent at all. But I walked in anyway. “Yes?” I said. She smiled at me as she wiped. “I just wanted to tell you that I’m going to stop yelling at you to wipe me. ‘Cause I’m 5 now and I know you’re not my servant.” If only I believed that…
•
And then it was my turn. I got to do a little clothes shopping this weekend. I went into the first dressing room all hopped up on child-less, no-curfew adrenaline. And as I started to pull off my jeans, the underwear I must have worn the LAST time I wore the jeans fell out, and slipped across the dressing room floor.

The good news is that I stuffed them into my purse and (to my knowledge) no one saw them. But runaway panties in public? What a rush.

Over the last few weeks I’ve been struggling to settle into a no-school routine, struggling to get used to the new addition of kid-fights, and struggling to find the time to write more than just !!! posts. I was so tired of what was turning into normalcy. I wanted calmer, better, happier days. And then a good friend read me this quote by Mary Jean Iron:
Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart. Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so. One day I shall dig my nails into the earth, or bury my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut, or raise my hands to the sky and want, more than all the world, your return.
Nothing like a good friend to get you over yourself.
•
And then I sat with ONE, arms wrapped around her as she cried (again) about school being over. I didn’t say anything this time because she didn’t seem to want comfort. I thought maybe the best thing I could do was just listen. In silence. When she was done she gave me a hug and said, “School might be out, but you know what I’m glad about? That you’ll never stop being my mama.“

I’m doing !!! tomorrow and I’m so excited, though I’m sure it won’t be nearly as fantastic as this one. I assure you, there were no runaway panties in my week. Wait…actually….there WAS!! Did you see my tweet with my son’s underwear on the living room rug. Oh now I might just have to include that in hommage to you. We’ll see. My photos won’t look at artsy as yours, but I’m on board because I relish the simple beauty of doing this. So mine will be up tomorrow.
And for the record, you are so lucky if you are off bum-wiping duty.

Thanks for linking up and playing along! Your post was great.
(And for the record, I don’t believe for a second that I’m really off butt-wiping duty. I’m pretty sure the !!! was really a sneaky ¡¡¡ in disguise.)
I love your !!! posts! I especially love the logic of children…if only I could avoid doing things by saying I have a rash! :) Wait, maybe I can? I might try that excuse tonight…wink wink

I have a few teenage boys who need lots of tissue paper flowers. Are they scented (she asked hopefully)???

Ones comment about you always being her momma is the sweetest thing I’ve heard all week.
I’m linking up tomorrow.

I just got called to wipe the butt of my SEVEN year old this morning. She still wants nothing to do with the blow-outs (toilet style).
I’m very glad that your daughter’s injuries weren’t worse.

Bunny was really sad school was over. She finished preschool and starts kindergarten in the fall. She has cried and said she misses her friends and when she is mad she screams she wants to go back to school. She has a birthday party with her old school friends. She is literally counting the days on the calendar.

“…you’re not my servant.” Oh my gosh that cracks me up. And then I have to ask where has she heard this line before? I’m totally using that with my little one. :o)
I’d like to say that I have no idea where she got that from, but she must have gotten it from somewhere…and I know I’ve definitely THOUGHT it before…
Aw, your kids are awesome! It’s so great that ONE knows that you are not her servant. My 5-year-old daughter still thinks that I AM her servant and I am definitely not off butt-wiping duty yet! I love that she’s glad you’ll never stop being her mama… SO sweet. You know what my daughter said to me yesterday morning? “My name is not ‘For God’s Sake’!!!” Oops. :-)

That is SO funny! I can’t even imagine trying to keep a straight face in the midst of that. (!!!)
Runaway panties? Rash presents? LOL!
And then you got me with the last one (as I sit here wiping my teary eyes re: the sweetness of it all). Dang it!
Love this post! So glad she is done with the papoose. Sounds like a pretty !!! week.
You might have missed my blog post about butt wiping, so I’ll link you up, so you know, you can share the joy that comes with wiping a 5 year olds butt from a boy perspective.

Well you might be struggling to write more than !!! posts right now but this one is just brilliant, there are so many parts to it that I love. The picture of your daughter waiting for her BFF to arrive is just wonderful.
Silent listening – that clearly was the perfect approach and your daughters words that followed, well they alone make an ordinary day extraordinary.
Thank you for sharing those words your friend read to you, these are words to remember, each and every day.
I’ll take two pairs of felt shoes (sizes 8 and 10) and a box of tissue flowers please. You deliver, right? FedEx OK??
And if I could ever remember what day it is (my husband’s home on paternity leave, so every day feels like Saturday), I’ll do a !!! post … Here’s to hoping my memory comes back once the hormones settle down … !!!

Oh god, your kid actually realizes you are not her servant? I am so jealous!
What IS it about kids and getting their hair brushed? Why do they hate it so much? It makes me so crazy that I always threaten to buzz-cut it.

ONE is so sweet.
Your posts looked like so much fun, I just had to join in. My week was so busy, I only have 1 !!!, but it’s better than nothing.

Sean got stitches when he was 14 months old. I curse the papoose board. I was so glad when I could grab him and hold him.
.-= faemom´s last blog ..Chasing time =-.
It was SO awful! Where were his stitches? Did it leave a bad scar?
Could you come have your kid come talk to my kid about me being a servant? Thanks :)
I *LOVE* The last one!

Your underwear story reminded me of something that happened to my mother recently. She put on the pants she had worn the day before and was heading into the store. She felt something around her ankle. She looked down and discovered it was her underwear from the day before. HA! I’ll have to let her know she’s not alone! ;)
That first photo is precious! They all are. Another wonderful post. ;)
I’ve been cracking up at all of the related underwear stories! I never would have guessed that THIS was something that happened to other people (!!!)
” ‘Cause I’m 5 now and I know you’re not my servant.”
Bahah ahahaha hahahahaha ha ha haha ha ha.
I can hear that from the back seat of the car. And I don’t believe it for a minute.
.-= Naptimewriting´s last blog ..Lead alert: juice and fruit =-.
I was right – believing it was wishful thinking, as last night turned into a dream session in the bathtub where she went on and on about all of the servants she’ll have some day in her, “mansion to the sky that has 30 canopy beds.” I politely declined the position of said servant before she could offer me the job. Her pay sucks and the benefits? Not enough to entice me to make 30 canopy beds…
Oh, that last one is just tooo !!!!!!! That makes it all worth it, doesn’t it? :) And no way are you off wipe duty.

I love your underwear reenactment. I will take four pairs of those felt shoes in various sizes. It’s effing HOT here and I walked to the car barefoot the other day and singed my feet because it was high noon and there were no shadows to jump into to cool off.

Oh my word, I *hated* the papoose board when I was little. I distinctly remember being about 2 or 3 years old and being straitjacketed by the papoose board to have my ears checked out. That stupid thing traumatized me, I think. I just remember crying and thrashing around because I hated being strapped down like that. Ugh. I can’t believe I actually recognized that papoose logo after all this time…I guess it made quite the impression on me, huh?
But anyway. I love what ONE said at the end about how you’ll never stop being her mama…so sweet! :)
P.S. Loved the “normal days” quote…I needed to read that…
P.P.S. I also love how you write in TWO-speak!! Haha, so cute, and in my head I can totally hear how she says it!
