bad mommy moments: the book!

I was struggling up a super steep hill in San Francisco last week (a pathetic sight, let me tell you) when I got this text from my mom:

I got all dizzy inside. And excited. And anxious. (And was also completely out of breath, though that probably had nothing to do with her text, and everything to do with the hills.) Because my mom was talking about my book. My book. MY BOOK! The last six years of writing during naptimes and time-outs, all edited, bound and weighing in at .85 lbs and 5×8 inches.

MY BOOK!

I tried to come up with a clever way to announce it, but it’s impossible. I’m too excited and tired and still a little dazed. (It was pretty much the longest labor ever.) So here’s the back cover instead:

This is it. This is the dream I’ve been chasing for the last six years. A book that charts the humorous and emotional journey of new motherhood. It’s designed to cater to the time constraints of new moms, with short vignettes and graphics that can be read in any order, making them ideal for quick breastfeeding breaks, or hiding from kids in the bathroom. Or, for a mom with more time, the book can be read straight through; all of the individual pieces connecting as a whole.

It’s here. It’s really here. I still can’t believe it.

It’s funny how dreams work. My whole life I’ve thought they were something I’d accomplish alone–in writerly quiet–and present to the world when I was finished. But in the 6 years I’ve spent working on this book I’ve learned that my dreams are actually loud, messy, claustrophobic, and filled with family and friends who span my life from preschool to present day.

Thank you to everyone who loved me, supported me, and created this book with me. Thank you to everyone reading this post right now, sharing in my excitement. And thank you to everyone who reads my book and passes it along. Thank you for helping my dreams come true.
